The Couropita guianensis Aubl., or Cannonball tree, of the Lecythidaceae family. The Cannonball tree is said to have a special significance to the Buddhist religion, a holy tree and a reminder of Buddha. It is a perennial plant that blossoms with flowers of a pink-orange color during the Buddhist Lent Season. There are 4-6 strong petals in each flower. The amazingly complex flower of the Cannonball tree is “heavenly” scented – a cross between a fine expensive perfume and a wonderful natural flower scent. The reason the tree is called cannonball is because after flowering, large brown fruit balls are formed, the size and shape of cannonballs.
